Community Ready: Resilience Network
Build practical household preparedness, offline information packs and community nodes that still work when normal connectivity is disrupted.
The problem
Households and community organisations can lose access to power, mobile data, payments, transport and reliable information during severe weather or infrastructure disruption. People with the least spare money are often least able to buy redundancy before a crisis.
The idea
Build preparedness during normal life: households keep modest rotating supplies; Sanctuary sells maintained offline packs and optional resilience hardware; community funding helps households that cannot afford them; partner nodes hold local information, charging and lawful offline media; and the system degrades from cloud to local node to radio/USB to paper instead of failing all at once.
The plan
Phase 1: publish practical 72-hour, 2-week and 4-week checklists and produce a versioned Sanctuary Offline Pack on USB plus printable equivalent. Phase 2: acquire rotating community stock such as water containers, torches, batteries, radios, power banks, blankets, hygiene and first-aid supplies. Phase 3: prototype a Sanctuary Field Companion with offline knowledge, maps, local AI where hardware permits, and lawful low-bandwidth messaging. Phase 4: prototype community Nodes with local Wi-Fi, SSD knowledge/media library, resilient power input and radio/message relay research. Phase 5: connect verified transport, charging, safe-space, kitchen, refrigeration and volunteer capacity without exposing vulnerable-household locations. All radio functions must remain within UK spectrum rules and emergency guidance must defer to official authorities.
Where we are
Developing. The resilience specification and historical stress case are defined; no funded stock, deployed radio mesh, live community node network or completed impact is claimed yet.
The story
A Gateshead-first resilience project covering household preparedness, rotating emergency supplies, Sanctuary Offline Packs, short-range licence-exempt radio, low-bandwidth digital messaging research, resilient community nodes, charging and information access. It is designed for ordinary storms, floods and outages first, while providing graceful degradation for rarer major emergencies.
What we already have
- NE8 household resilience manual and offline-information model
- Existing Sanctuary Projects, Capacity, delivery, Exchange and participation architecture
- Documented PMR446 licence-exempt short-range family/vehicle radio layer
- Existing Dropzone/Sanctuary relay-node and offline-node design language
- A graceful-degradation rule: cloud → local node → low-bandwidth radio/message layer → USB → paper
What we need
- Useful preparedness supplies: sealed water containers, torches, batteries, blankets, radios, power banks, first-aid and hygiene items
- Hardware for node prototypes: low-power mini computers, SSDs, routers/access points, battery systems and compliant radio equipment
- People with networking, electronics, radio, first-aid, logistics or emergency-planning skills
